Last year on the crew we got to review Apologia’s Who is God? and I feel so blessed to have had the privilege of reviewing the second book in the series Who Am I? (And What Am I Doing Here?)this year.
Thanks Apologia!
This book is just as amazing as the first one. All the kids have participated in the study of this book which “helps children understand what it means to be fearfully and wonderfully made in image of the Most High God.”
I’ve notice the kids having ah-ha moments and I’ve actually seen some attitude changes. Everyone participates from 10th grade all the way down to the Kindergartener (written TO kids ages 6-14).
One of the biggest things they have learned thus far is that feelings are neither right nor wrong, they just are. Having feelings is not a sin, it is how you act upon those feelings that cause us to sin. Dealing with bullies or being a bully yourself.
We are in the process of adopting more kids and these kids agree that we will go thru this book again to assist the new kids, who will probably have had traumatic backgrounds and not know “who” they are. This book will teach them who they are in this great big world of being part of God’s family not just our family.
I see such potential in this book for them!!
From the website: “This study will enable students to develop a healthy self-image based on these biblical truths: God made me in His image and crowned me with glory; He has given me special gifts and a unique purpose in life; I can creatively express God's love; I am meant to think about beautiful and praiseworthy things, especially God and His Word; I must make decisions based on God's truth; I can always know the wise thing to do; I must cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in my life; I am a beloved child of God whose true identity is found in Christ.”
We have been doing this book orally. Even tho we received the Notebooking Journal with the text book, after skimming the book I decided the younger kids needed to participate and they’d get more out of it as a group. Even they are anxious to get started every morning. There is an audio CD that could be used while driving and have discussions there too.
What is even more rewarding? To hear this conversation…..
Max (5): Nana, are we done yet?
Charlie (10): I hope not.
Max: I want to be I’m tired of sitting here.
Charlie: The best part is the sitting and talking after we read.
Max: I like it too but we sit here a long long time.
Charlie: You’ll understand and appreciate this kind of thing more when you are older. (yes he actually talks like this lol). This is the best part of my whole school day.
Charlie is our busy busy boy. Can hardly sit still for anything until we did the first book Who is God? (And Can I Really Know Him?). He was the most excited about receiving this second book Who Am I? (And Why Am I Here?).
This book has eight lessons (we are already half way thru chapter 4). Each lesson is broken down into several sections. A few sections include: the Big Idea; What You Will Do; Think About It; Vocabulary words; Hide It in Your Heart; What Should I Do?; A Prayer; and many many more. There is also a story in each section (the kids are totally enjoying reading about Sasha and Ivan).
I can’t say anything negative about this book. It receives high praises for our family. In the time we’ve had to review this book, we are just over half way thru it. It is just that awesome!
We received the text book ($39), the CD ($19), the Notebooking Journal ($24) and the special coloring book ($8) for our review. Like I said previously, we didn’t use the journal because we did all of this orally, but for an older student, this would be a great way for them to use it independently. The little ones (well, some big ones too lol) enjoy the coloring book.
You can find this book and all the others in the series from Apologia. Apologia has many other products on their website as well. Curriculum. Parental training. Science (these are great too!).
These books are hardcover, sturdy, thicker pages, full of color. Easy to teach and understand and very thoroughly done. Love the picture on the front by Norman Rockwell. It speaks volumes.
Did I tell you this is a very awesome book?! Well I’m telling you now….this book, series of books, is very very awesome!
Check out what my fellow crewmates had to say.
The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. [Job 33:4]
